If you're a fashion lover, then you're in for a treat. Balenciaga's latest collection - "Capital B" - for spring 2024 has arrived, and it's absolutely stunning! The iconic Parisian address at 10, avenue George V was transformed into a runway as models strutted their stuff in a digital fashion show broadcasted worldwide on May 30th.
The short film, directed by Spanish artist Mau Morgó, revealed 44 looks and featured a single continuous shot that captured the essence of Parisian life. From models walking dogs to passers-by taking shelter from the rain, this five-minute clip perfectly encapsulated the daily ballet played out in the city of love. The collection was divided into two chapters: the 'wardrobe' line made up of timeless essentials and more seasonal ready-to-wear pieces. For women, there were long, refined black velvet dresses, resolutely disco dresses embroidered with sequins and silver fringes, and crimson red dresses with endless pleats made from technical crepe fabric. And for the men, they were dressed in architecturally-designed outfits including a half tartan, half quilted coat in rare wool, a jet-black trench coat and a skirt (yes, you read that right!), called the 'Towel Skirt', in various shades of beige, indigo blue, charcoal grey, and deep black.
But the outfits were not complete without Balenciaga's iconic 'Hourglass' handbag, fishnet and crystal bags, 'Romeo' mules, and biker boots that morphed into slippers as the wearer saw fit. What sets this show apart is its inclusivity. As the world continues to grapple with the Covid-19 pandemic, Balenciaga pays tribute to the daily ballet played out in Paris with a digital event accessible to all. The online fashion show democratizes the industry, inviting fashion lovers from all walks of life to experience the beauty and glamour of high-end fashion. This collection is a stylistic exploration of tailoring and the interplay of structure, echoing Balenciaga's previous show in March, at the Carousel du Louvre in Paris. The fashion house has adopted a low profile since last December's controversial advertising scandal, but with "Capital B," it's clear that they're back and better than ever.
